What is a Merge Field?

Umango merge fields are text areas within Umango that have access to metadata snippets or functions to retrieve or manipulate data.

Some examples of how you might use a merge field are:

• Use the REPLACE function to search for some text and replace it with other text. eg. Search for blank spaces and replace them with the underscore "_" character
• Use the UCASE function to convert some text to upper case
• Use the LDAP function to lookup Active Directory and retrieve a user's phone number
• Use the XML function to read an element within an xml file alongside the source document

The Umango GUI makes it easy to build these merged values with helper, preemptive text that assists with syntax and access to functions. Merge fields have a slightly different appearance to normal text fields - they contain a light blue background and will list merge options once you start typing in the field. Here is a merge field showing a list of helpers.

A complete merge field might look something like this...

In the example above, the file will be named something like Scanned on Thursday by Robert.

The example above shows the syntax helper highlighting the DateTime lookup in red. This is displayed because the user has left our an opening bracket "(".
